The Cover · Finals MVP

Brunson, in full.

The point guard everyone passed on twice carried New York to the title - and walked off with the trophy nobody booked him for.

He was never the prospect. Too slow, the scouts said, too earthbound, a second-round body in a lottery league. Sixteen postseason games later the argument is over. Brunson lived in the mid-range, drew the double, and made the right read on a loop until the series bent to his pace. The man does not dunk on you. He files you away.

Six closeout possessions, six correct decisions. That is the whole report. The rest of the league spent the spring chasing length and switchability; the Finals came down to a guy who knew exactly where the foul line was.

The Wire

June 2026, off the record: the Giannis sweepstakes and the Tyler Herro question, with everything the league is whispering and none of it confirmed.

  1. Trade WindsHotHot confidence

    Giannis Antetokounmpo

01Milwaukee swears the door is shut, but the Greek Freak's camp has stopped saying the quiet part quietly. Two coastal contenders have a package built and waiting; the holdup is whether the front office will admit the window cracked.

  2. The Asking PriceHotHot confidence

    Giannis Antetokounmpo

02Word is the number starts at four unprotected firsts and an All-Star young enough to grow into the role. Nobody has said no. Nobody has said yes. Everybody has the spreadsheet open.

  3. Free Agency, EarlyWarmWarm confidence

    Tyler Herro

03Herro has quietly told friends he wants the ball, the market, and the max - in that order. Miami can offer the third. The first two are a flight away, and he knows the routes.

  4. Sign-and-TradeWarmWarm confidence

    Tyler Herro

04Three teams have floated framework deals that keep the Heat whole and get Herro paid. The sticking point is the same as always: who eats the extra year nobody wants to guarantee.
